If you’re anything like me, buying new beauty products requires a rave review by a trusted beauty blogger, one personal testimonial from a close friend, and at least 4.5 stars on Amazon. Investing in cosmetics can be a money suck and I don’t like having to find space I don’t have for products I don’t like.

It was with that simple frame of mind that my blog beauty series was born. I love makeup just as much as the next girl, but break the bank I will not. I want to know what the best options are and if it’s worth buying before I make the purchase. With that in mind, I hope you enjoy my Lipstick Series. This one is dedicated to the liquid lipsticks my favorite beauty bloggers are raving about.

In this article I will review the top 7 Liquid Lipsticks I’m seeing everywhere. They range in price from $6.99 to $25. Here is my no-nonsense look at liquid lipsticks…

Liquid lipstick is a super-saturated formula that delivers highly pigmented color in one easy swipe. It is not a lip stain, it’s not lipgloss, and it’s not like your standard twist tube lipstick. It’s applied with a wand whose shape and quality will make it more or less easy to use, which is a major factor when dealing with liquids. For the most part, they have a quick drying effect, which can be tricky if not applied correctly – having some makeup wipes handy is helpful! Different brands offer different types of finish; I tend to gravitate to the mattes, although, the glossy finish liquids are really beautiful too.

The purpose of a liquid lipstick is to provide solid coverage with the added bonus of staying power. I found that not all liquids are made the same, and depending on the finish (matte, velvet, glossy, etc.) you will have varying levels of wear. Liquids tend to have better coverage, really showing off their color. I can’t stress enough how different each brand really is, and price does not dictate quality. With the right formula, liquid lipsticks are a god-sent for the girl on the go who doesn’t want to hassle with reapplying lipstick all day.

With great power comes great responsibility… wait, that’s Spider Man. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover… no, that’s not it either. So, liquid lipstick is awesome. It’s got some great features. But, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. The Drying Effect: We can’t have our cake and eat it too. Most of these are made to dry on your lips so that they can stay on longer. With that plus, comes the minus of it drying out your lips. I offset this by using chapstick anytime I’m not wearing makeup. You can also put lipgloss on top of the matte drying liquid formulas, if you prefer to keep your lips moist all day.
  2.  It’s Messy: The only thing I can tell you is, be ready. Applying liquid lipstick requires a steady hand. This is not something you want to do without a mirror. If you get it outside the lines, you want to clean it off quickly.
  3. Quality: Almost all beauty brands are making liquid lipstick now, but they’re not all made the same. Finding the brand you feel most comfortable with is going to be key. Aside from the formula of the liquid, the shape and quality of the wand makes a difference. They also tend to create build up on the lips after long periods of time, so reapplication is inevitable.

SPILLING THE TEA ON LIQUIDS: to avoid swaying your favor in one direction or another, I’ll keep my review as objective as possible using a random well-thought out rating system that probably only makes sense to me as I’ve been intensely invested in liquid lipsticks all week and writing this article for just as long.

Without further adieu, here are the 7 liquid lipsticks under review…

The NYX brand is a solid low priced beauty dream. Ms. Toni Ko really hit a home run when she started the company in 1999, giving the world department store quality products at drug store prices. They have come up with a few liquid lip options, one of which is their Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick. The one I tried is called “Kitten Heels” which is like a burnt red color, with a suede finish.

Price: $6.99 | Overall Rating: 3.5

Application: Smooth | Color: Solid | Mess Factor: Very little | Staying Power: Low

Gerard Cosmetics company was created by women for women. It’s founder and CEO, Jennifer Gerard, started with one product and grew it into what it is today. The brand is used by makeup artists and is known for it’s highly pigmented quality. I was turned on to Gerard by one of my favorite beauty bloggers and can be bought online at gerardcosmetics.com. I decided to try their liquid lipstick in “Iced Mocha.”

Price: $20 – and they always have deals | Overall Rating: 5

Application: Super Easy | Color: Solid | Mess Factor: Hardly Any | Staying Power: Medium

YES, YES, AND MORE YES. My tried and true favorite makeup brand, nailed it! I have yet to find another brand that delivers this level of consistent quality over such a wide variety of products offered. Their liquid lipstick formula is without hesitation, the best from this group. It goes on smooth, not too thin or too thick, so it’s easy to maneuver. The wand was made to hit the lips in the right place, making it hard to color outside the lines. Within minutes, the liquid dries and stays put for hours! I tried their Retro Matte formula in “Tailored To Tease” which is a beautiful light magenta color.

Price: $20 | Overall Rating: 5

Application: Super Easy | Color: Solid | Mess Factor: None | Staying Power: High

That bright red lip on Gigi Hadid may have mesmerized me when I was at Ulta deciding on a color. I decided to try “Rebel Red” and see what all the hype was about. The formula didn’t seem to dry as I thought it would, keeping it wet on my lips most of the night. It required two coats. Application was easy, the wand was made well. It’s a definite contender based on it’s price point.

Price: $7.99 | Overall Rating: 3

Application: Easy | Color: Good | Mess Factor: Little | Staying Power: Low

I may have missed the bus that was picking people up to take them to the Tarte lovers convention, but I’m slowly getting in line. Tarte’s answer to the liquid lipstick is their “Lip Paint” edition, and I’m on board. The formula is not as drying as other liquids, and the color options are on point (not to mention the names are crafty and fun). I decided to try “Bae” which is a dark bright red (if that makes sense). Two coats work best with this one.

Price: $20 | Overall Rating: 4

Application: Okay | Color: Good | Mess Factor: Little | Staying Power: Medium

The color options in this line are great; they have multiple shades of the same color, giving you plenty of options. I liked the staying power of the Stila brand, but the wand was not as easy to use as the MAC wand. The formula goes on more liquid than MAC, but has similar drying effects. I decided to try “Aria” since most of the others were sold out.

Price: $24 | Overall Rating: 5

Application: Easy | Color: Great | Mess Factor: Little | Staying Power: High

This one has been on my list for a while now. Ms. Amra (a.k.a. @Amrezy, #glamrezy) introduced her line of liquid lipsticks not too long ago and has been selling out since! With over 4 million Instagram followers, this MUA is a force to be reckoned with. Her partnership with Lipland Cosmetics, a company committed to producing Phthalates-Free, Sodium Lauryl Sulfates free, Gluten-Free and Paraben-Free (never tested on animals) products, has a full line of fun I’m dying to try. I decided to start with “Montenegro” this deep burgundy liquid lipstick. [Quick Fact: The formula on liquids will vary from color to color, even within the same brand, there’s a whole chemistry thing that happens – don’t ask me to explain.] With that in mind, I don’t think I can judge this one the same way I would a soft lavender or even red. I love the depth and thickness of the formula, but found the applicator hard to use without making a mess. It definitely takes some skill (and tons of practice in my case) to apply such a color rich liquid. I’m definitely going to order more from the line, but think my dark angel look may be a no-go. You be the judge.

Price: $18.99 | Overall Rating: 3.5

Application: Hard | Color: Great | Mess Factor: Medium | Staying Power: High

My liquid lipstick obsession continues… I plan on reviewing another set in a few weeks. While I may think I found the holy grail, I’m still open to finding more! I hope you found this review helpful. If so, I’d love to hear from you! Send me your top picks via email at: lovelaviedaily@yahoo.com.

If there’s a makeup products you’d like me to review, I’d love to hear about it!
